Two things make Arizona sun tougher on a roof than sun in a milder climate: how much of it a roof gets, and how hot the roof surface climbs under it. Both run near the top of the national range here, and both work on the roof every day of the year.

How Much Sun a Phoenix Roof Actually Takes

Phoenix sits among the sunniest places in the country. Solar data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory puts the area's direct normal irradiance around 7.35 kilowatt-hours per square meter per day, with roughly 7.2 to 7.5 peak sun hours a day in summer. A roof here absorbs that load nearly every day, winter included, when UV does not take the season off. Every kind of roof we install for residential roofing across Arizona lives under that exposure.

Surface Temperature Is Not Air Temperature

The number on a thermometer is not the number your roof feels. A dark roof in full summer sun reaches 150 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit, according to U.S. Department of Energy cool-roof data, while a reflective roof under the same sun stays around 50 degrees cooler. On a 110 degree Phoenix afternoon, in other words, the material overhead can be running 40 to 80 degrees hotter than the air. That heat is what teams up with UV to break a roof down.

How UV Actually Breaks a Roof Down

UV damage is not one event. Three things happen together: ultraviolet light attacks the material's binders, daily heat swings flex it, and the protective surface slowly wears away. The loss of that surface is what makes the rest speed up.

Asphalt, foam topcoats, and single-ply membranes are all held together by chemical bonds that UV light is very good at breaking. As those bonds break, the material oxidizes and hardens. Granule loss is the first tell, then fading, curling edges, and cracks. The bald spots where granules have washed off expose the asphalt and speed everything up.

Asphalt Shingles

Shingles are the most visibly affected by UV. The first sign is granule loss: you find granules that look like coarse black sand in the gutters and at the bottom of downspouts. As the granules go, the shingle fades, its edges curl or cup, and it turns brittle enough to crack. Clay and Concrete Tile

Tile fools people, because the tile itself shrugs off UV and can last for decades. What fails is the underlayment underneath, the waterproof layer that actually keeps the roof dry. Myth: UV Only Matters in Summer
